Summary of Chapters 4-6
The town of Odessa and Permian High School have had a lot of problems with racism. The blacks and whites had seperate schools until the 1970's. Permian was an all-white school. Even when they allowed black to attend Permian there was still lots of racism. The blacks were still treated like they weren't good enough. The coaches were happy to have the black kids on their football team. The football field is the only place where black actually got any respect. Off the field they were just a black person again. The fans cheered for all of the football players, even the blacks. There is only six black players on the Permian High School team. Every one of them started. The whites only respected them becuase they were football players. As soon as they left the field they were mistreated again.
