Summary of Chapters 1-3

The beginning starts off with explaining the history of Odessa to us. Odessa is a town that is in the middle of nowwhere in Texas. It is a boomtown so its population goes up and down. Odessa had nothing until people discovered all of the oil in the town. Odessa has a huge tradition in following high school football. The whole state of Texas follows high school football. Odessa's high school is the Permian Panthers. Permian has a tradition of being one of the top football teams in all of Texas. It is the beginning of the 1988 football season and Permian has thousands of supporters. Their star player is their running back Boobie Miles. He can do anything on the football field. Everything in his life revolves around football. He isn't very good in school but he has scholarships to play at the Division 1 football level. It is his senior year. In a preseason game he hurts his knee and the doctor said it is a serious injury. It could cost Boobie a shot at playing college football. What is Boobie going to do if he can't play football?......
